Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been discussing the goalkeeping situation once again.

First-choice Loris Karius found himself under pressure and heavy media scrutiny following a number of errors in recent weeks, most prominently in the dropped points against Bournemouth and West Ham, and Klopp responded by taking him out of the firing line against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

Simon Mignolet replaced the 23-year-old in goal at the Riverside, and after a game in which the Belgian kept a clean sheet and turned in a sold, confident performance as the side won 3-0, Klopp has confirmed that he will keep his place for Monday night’s Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the derby, Klopp stated that constantly changing goalkeepers simply wasn’t an option:

“I don’t want to change each week. That was not the plan.

“Simon made a really good game, so he will be in goal for sure. I tried to explain it after the game. It was about not pushing Loris through the situation.

“He can use the time in training now and having no pressure — only the pressure he makes himself with getting better. I know about how fantastic he is as a goalkeeper. Of course it’s not enough if only I know about it.

“Simon did really well so there’s nothing to think about, only if something happens and then we have Loris again.”

Karius arrived at Liverpool in a £4.7m deal from Mainz in the summer, after a series of underwhelming displays from Mignolet had convinced Klopp that a new first-choice goalkeeper was needed.

With the status quo now reversed, however, Karius will know that he will have a fight on his hands, or else wait for another high-profile Mignolet error, to reclaim what he sees as his rightful spot in the Liverpool starting eleven.
