Breaking: Premier League manager of the month for September announced 1

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp has received the honor, beating competition from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (his second unsuccessful nomination in a row), Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and Alan Pardew of Crystal Palace.

Klopp becomes the first German manager to win the award (as per the Premier League’s website) and has done so as a result of Liverpool’s brilliant form in the month.

Liverpool played three matches in September – against Leicester, Chelsea, and Hull – and won all three convincingly as Klopp’s side took firm control in the battle for the Champions League places.

Klopp himself was happy to accept the award, but insisted that the team should always come first:

“I went into the office of my coaches and said, ‘We are Manager of the Month! I don’t need personal prizes but it’s nice now I have another one’.

“We are on a good way but there are so many good teams in this league and so many difficult games for us, which we have to be ready for. I’m fine with the moment, but we have to play a few more games and hopefully we perform well.”

As is the case with the Premier League’s other major awards, a panel of experts, in an addition to a public vote, decide who ends up with the award.

Mike Phelan caused something of a surprise in August when the Hull City manager beat off Guardiola, José Mourinho, and Antonio Conte to win the prize.
