Real Madrid will be able to buy new players in the next summer transfer window as their two-year transfer ban has been reduced to one year. The club have also had their fine reduced from £282,000 to £188,000.
The reigning Champions League winners were banned by FIFA from registering new players until January 2018 but Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo has reported the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) has overturned the apex body’s verdict.
Real were found guilty of violating Article 19 which states transfers of under 18 players are only possible in one of three very specific circumstances.
- Both the player’s parents have moved to the city where the new club is based and have made the move for reasons not related to the transfer.
- The transfer is between two European clubs and the player is over 16.
- If a player lives 50 km from the border of the country, he is moving to and the club is also 50m from the same border.
And although they denied violating the rule, the world governing body imposed a two-year ban on them. The Spanish giants appealed against the decision but FIFA upheld the ban last September which led Real Madrid to turn to the CAS.

The decision by the CAS was given on Tuesday (December 20) and a statement from the Los Blancos read:”The Court of Arbitration for Sports (TAS) on Tuesday announced to Real Madrid CF the award for partially estimating the appeal made by the club against the resolution of FIFA that imposed a penalty of prohibition of registration of players during two periods of signings, reducing it to one, the window corresponding to January 2017.
“This award highlights the unfairness of the penalty imposed by FIFA in its day, although the club regrets that the CAS has not had enough courage to repeal it entirely.”
