Brentford’s Ivan Toney has taken a dig at Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes after the Brazilian celebrated their 3-0 win over Thomas Frank’s side by tweeting ‘Nice kick about with the boys’. However, it was Toney who sparked the row by tweeting a similar message last season when a newly promoted Brentford inflicted a 2-0 loss on Arsenal on the opening day of the Premier League.

But the Gunners did exact their revenge by claiming all three points in the return fixture during the 20/21 campaign through a 2-1 win, as Alexandre Lacazette had then tweeted the same ‘Nice kick about with the boys’ to mock the England international. Toney has now amusingly labelled Gabriel’s second-timer as ‘cringey’, after Lacazette had already given it back.

Celebrations over the top suggests Ivan Toney on Gabriel’s tweet

Arsenal have been regenerated by Mikel Arteta this season as they sit atop of the Premier League table with six wins from seven games. By this time last season, the Gunners were reeling in the relegation places as they struggled to find rhythm. Come new season, and new signings in the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabio Vieira, Arsenal are demolishing the opponents coming across them.

After a disappointing defeat against Manchester United however, they clinched a statement win against Brentford with goals from William Saliba, Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira. Their defense earned a third clean-sheet as well, with the Gunners going into the international break sitting on top of the table. Meanwhile, celebrating their win against the Bees, center-back Gabriel Magalhaes couldn’t resist digging up Ivan Toney’s tweet from last season to invoke some fun.

Toney however felt Gabriel rejoicing the tweet, which his former teammate Lacazette had already made was a bit ‘cringey’. In his latest interview the 26-year-old said:

“I think once [Lacazette’s tweet] was funny, second time was a bit cringey. I bit my tongue, I wanted to reply and wanted to nibble. But fair play to them [Arsenal], they are a different Arsenal side to the one we played before.”

Here’s the timeline of the tweets rom Toney, Lacazette and Gabriel:

Nonetheless, Ivan Toney has much more to celebrate about after receiving his maiden England call up by Gareth Southgate. The striker has continued his exploits from last season, where he bagged 12 goals and 5 assists in 33 Premier League games, with 5 goals and 2 assists in 7 outings so far. He now has chance to feature for the Three Lions in their UEFA Nations League games against Italy and Germany. On his selection, Toney said:

“So surreal. I feel like I’m sitting in here in an England top is such a privilege and is massive for me and my family and also my club. It is not just me that has done this, it is everyone around me that has played a massive part.”

He will now have the chance to make his case for the upcoming FIFA World Cup if all he managed to emulate his club form in national colours. While Harry Kane is the undisputed choice in the no.9 position, Ivan Toney could provide a brilliant back-up for the England captain at the world tournament.
