Capital One Cup: Manchester City win League Cup on penalties: player ratings
Manchester City lifted their first silverware in two seasons when they beat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side 3-1 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 after extra time. It was a great moment for the winning manager who is set to leave the club at the end of the season.
Willy Caballero became an unlikely hero in the shoot-out as Manchester City now try to continue their form in the remaining competitions. Here are the player ratings for this match for both clubs:
Should have stopped the first City goal but more than made up for it with a number of crucial close-range saves to take the game to penalties.
Defended well against the likes of Sterling on the flank and also added some width to the Liverpool attacks in the final third.
Arguably the best player on the field, Lucas had a solid game as a center back where he won almost everything in the air and kept the City front line quite for long spells.
Started sharply but had to be taken off after a clash of heads with Emre Can in the first half.
Hardly helped Liverpool at the back and was lucky not to concede a penalty for the shocking tackle on Aguero in the second half.
An energetic performance in the mid-field as he gave everything for the full 120 minutes and helped Liverpool drive forward from the back.
Gave away the ball on more than a couple of occasions but kept the Liverpool midfield nice and compact till the end.
Made a number of runs in the final third and also put in some important balls into the city penalty area but was unlucky not to have created more than he did.
Could not influence the game to his liking and was isolated at times before coming off early in the second half.
Found loads of space in the final third and also scored the equalizer for the Reds before failing to convert his spot kick in the shoot-out.
Played the whole 120 minutes for the club on the night and also worked hard all night but had little to show for his efforts.
K Toure (3)
A Lallana (3)
Made a number of brilliant saves in normal time before turning out to be the hero after saving three penalties in the shootout to give City the League Cup.
He was solid at the back giving Liverpool no space and time down the flank. Came off just before the 90 minutes.
Made all the difference at the back for City as he stood tall and made a number of interceptions keep Manchester City strong and solid at the back.
Looked strong alongside his skipper as he kept the Liverpool front line quite for most of the night.
Strong performance from the left back as he stuck to his task well and also sent in a couple of superb crosses in the final third.
Made a number of crucial interceptions in front of his defense and also helped his team keep the ball moving in the mid-field.
The unlikely goal scorer for the Citizens, Fernandinho had a superb game on the right flank where he defended stoutly and also made late runs into the box.
Yaya Toure (3):
Caused some problems to the Liverpool back four and also scored the all important penalty that saw Manchester City lift the Capital One Cup.
Should have finished the game off in normal time as he missed a couple of glorious chances to put the game to bed even before extra time.
Sparkled in the final third even as he was isolated at times. Stuck the post, should have got a penalty and also buried his spot kick in a complete performance from the Argentine.
