Chelsea 1-1 Soton – Top 5 key talking points as Mourinho’s men held to another draw at home
All the eyes were on Chelsea for this match as the world expected a reaction from Jose Mourinho’s men after the shocking exit from the Champions League at the hands of PSG. Jose Mourinho was supremely confident of Chelsea running away with the title but his side did not play like champions today.
Chelsea looked rattled when Southampton broke at them with speed and were lucky to be on the level terms going in to the half time. Chelsea lead city by 6 points with a game in hand but a performance like today’s does not guarantee an easy passage towards the title for the Blues.
We take a look at the key talking points from the game as Chelsea draw 1-1 at home against Southampton.
Chelsea are hanging on due to their early season form
This Chelsea side is nowhere near the levels we saw from them earlier in the season that is why it is not a surprise to see them draw their league game in less than 3 weeks’ time. Chelsea’s early season’s form and Manchester City’s awful 2015 is the reason why they are at the top.
On the basis of their current form, they do not look like the worthy champions.
Southampton deserve all the applauds they are getting
Southampton went to Stamford Bridge, dominated the first half and hung on in the second. It says a lot about the mental strength Ronald Keoman has installed at St. Mary’s. Southampton need to have a strong finish to the season and their key players like Dusan Tadic, Saido Mane, Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin are once again at their best and this squad deserves every bit of praise they have received throughout the season.
Cesc Fabregas continues to lose form in the second half of a season
Last week Sportzwiki highlighted how Cesc Fabregas tends to suffers a major blip in form, today was no different for the Spanish star. Fabregas tried and tried but it did not come off for him. Fabregas looked clueless at times in his own penalty box.
Fabregas had his side in trouble twice by playing slack back passes only for Terry to swipe it clear. Jose Mourinho has a big task in his hands of re-establishing Fabregas’ impact on the pitch.
PSG have shown the world, how to CONTAIN Chelsea
Earlier in the season, Chelsea were smashing 2-3 goals in games for fun then the blues ran in to a French wall which has laid a blueprint for all the sides in the world who want to stop Chelsea from winning the games.
Southampton came in to the game well-prepared and perhaps took a leaf out of PSG’s book by letting Schneiderlin and Wanyama sit in the midfield and let their full-backs (Bertand and Clyne) keeping the Chelsea defence honest at the back. Saido Mane was the man who was the dynamic presence for saints and did a great work in getting the better of Matic and Fabregas.
Premier League title is not decided, NOT YET for atleast
Chelsea do have a 6 points lead over 2nd placed Manchester City with a game in hand should have sealed the title for the clues but an unconvincing performance tonight must have got even the most die-hard Chelsea fans worried.
Mourinho’s men are yet to play 2-3 of the in-form sides and on basis of their current form, Chelsea do look like dropping points which could open the gates for the likes of City and Arsenal to mount their title push. By all accounts, Premier League is far from getting decided.
