Chelsea almost lost their star attacker this summer, but Conte blocked last minute swoop from PSG 1

PSG reportedly made a last ditch swoop for Diego Costa in the summer transfer window.

The Chelsea striker was apparently targeted late on after the French champions had sold David Luiz back to the Stamford Bridge outfit for around 30 million pounds.

Having let the 29-year-old leave the Parc des Princes, PSG looked to strengthening their frontline as a result.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure to Manchester United has left them with Edinson Cavani up top.

But according to France Football, PSG attempted a sudden ambitious move for Costa in the final hours of the transfer window.

However, new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is claimed to have vetoed the switch, keeping the Spain striker in west London.

With no time to replace the former Atletico Madrid hitman, the Blues would have been left short of firepower going into the new campaign.

Michy Batshuayi was brought in from Marseille for £32m this summer but Conte was reportedly keen on adding another face up front.

Costa has begun the season in fine form, having scored five goals in five Premier League games, leaving Chelsea fans relieved they did not lose their focal striker.

The in-form attacker has already admitted that he was very close to a return to Atletico Madrid.

Costa spent two years at Atletico, scoring 43 goals and formed a good relationship with manager Diego Simeone, who led the team to the La Liga title and the Champions League final in 2013/14.

Atleti reportedly wanted to re-sign Costa this summer but were unable to persuade Chelsea to part ways with the Spain striker.

Costa has netted a total of 34 goals in 56 Premier League appearances since moving to Chelsea in 2014.

There had been speculation this summer that new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was looking to replace Costa, but the striker has been key for the Blues in their first five Premier League games.
