Twitter war started as Chelsea fans troll Gerrard ahead of Liverpool vs Chelsea showdown

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard may be enjoying his life at LA Galaxy, but that doesn’t mean rival supporters have forgotten him.

The former England captain ended his 28-year trophy-laden association with the Anfield club last summer.

However, he is most recently remembered for his role in Liverpool’s 2013/14 title race slip-up – an event he’ll be served up a reminder of this week.

With his side seemingly on course for their first top flight glory since 1990, Gerrard’s mistake at home to Chelsea left Demba Ba clean through on goal, a chance the Senegal international gleefully gobbled up.

And with Liverpool going on to lose the game, their title bid was shattered, opening the door for Manchester City to pip them on the final day.

The moment is one Gerrard has as yet been unable to live down, with merciless trolling at almost every game he’s featured in since.

And ahead of his boyhood club’s pre-season showdown with Chelsea on Thursday night, it’s set to continue.

The Premier League giants are ready to meet in the International Champions Cup and Blues fans have already prepared a message for the former Liverpool captain.

Images are circulating on Twitter of a banner displaying Gerrard’s lack of top flight title wins (0) compared to those of Chelsea legend John Terry (4) – with the Anfield hero cruelly branded ‘Slippy G’.

And while a Liverpool win will not overturn the deficit, it may go some way to buying Gerrard.

Chelsea are coming off their first preseason win after they thrashed Austrian Football Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC, 3-0, at the Wörthersee Stadion last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Liverpool remained undefeated after four friendly games so far this preseason. Their most recent match was a 2-0 blanking of Football League Championship squad Huddersfield Town AFC at the John Smith’s Stadium.
