Chelsea joins race for Man Utd target who is a World Class PSG defender
Chelsea are reportedly interested in Paris Saint-Germain right back Gregory van der Wiel. The Dutch international has attracted interest from Manchester United in recent weeks as the player’s former national team manager Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his defense.
Chelsea have two right backs in their squad with Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta who plays as a left back. Ivanovic is 31 now and chelsea are looking to bring the 41 times capped Netherlands international to cover the Serbian captain.
The Dutchman has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Parc des Princes this summer with Serge Aurier as the first choice right back and is reportedly available for a fee of around £14million, with just a year left on his current contract.
The 27 year old Holland international revealed that he is free to seek a transfer.
“I want to stay at PSG but the club wants me to go,” he told Le Parisien.
He said that, “things are clear.”
van der Wiel featured for the French champions 38 times last season in all competitions and after the player rejected to sign a contract extension, Paris Saint-Germain is looking to cash in the former Ajax defender.
Manchester United is also monitoring the situation of van der Wiel but have not made any offer yet.
The Dutchman gets a salary of €250,000 gross per month and wants a salary hike. PSG are refusing to agree the salary demand from the full back and if an offer is tabled from the Blues or the Red Devils, they are believed to cash him in rather than losing him for free next summer.
