Chelsea Star Reveals He Was All Set To Leave Stamford Bridge In Summer
Chelsea star Diego Costa has revealed that he was very close to quitting Stamford Bridge in summer after experiencing a horrid last season with the Blues.
The Spain international, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League to help the Blues win the title in his debut season, had a poor last season where he could score only 11 goals and his team finished a lowly 10th. The former Atletico Madrid striker has been in devastating form this season under new coach Antonio Conte but things could have totally different for him and the West London outfit had he decided to leave the club. The 28-year old revealed that he had the chance to move to Atletico Madrid but insisted that he is very content now.
“Could I have gone in the summer? Yes, yes. I was about to leave,” he said. “I was about to but, well, I’m happy here as well and that’s that,” he told reporters.
“Did I want to go? Yes, yes. I had the possibility to go to Atletico, because of a few things, the family, the life I have there but not because of Chelsea, because, here, there’s a lot of love with the supporters, with the people, so I’m here very happy, I’m very content,” he said.
“People love me a lot. There was one thing I wanted to change for family reasons but, well, it wasn’t to be and I continue to be happy here. It was important too that the manager, from the very first minute, said he counted on me,” he added.
The Brazil-born striker also had some words of praise for the Chelsea boss. After a poor season, the former Juventus manager has done a remarkable turnaround at the club and they are currently sitting at the top of the table.
Costa said:“The truth is the manager is good with the players, every time making more jokes with the players, and that’s good for us, to have a manager who is not just a boss but like a person we can talk with, someone whose support we can count on in difficult moments. He is calm with the players and you can see the people love him more all the time.”
One of Conte’s biggest contribution has to be turning Costa from a hot-headed player into a goal-machine. Costa’s stay in England has been marred with controversies but the Spanish striker is finally concentrating on his game and it has paid rich dividends for him as well as the club. He has scored 14 league goals so far which have played a major part in Chelsea’s impressive 13-game winning run.
“I know what I have to do. I know when I do bad, so I thought about it and knew I had to improve that aspect because, here in the Premier League, the reality is there’s no mercy [authority], a lot of the time it seemed like they [referees] were against me,” he explained.
“There was no other way, because if they’re not going to change, I had to change” Costa said.
