Chinese Super League (CSL) clubs are reportedly ready to make Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney the best-paid footballer in the world.
The England international became United’s all-time leading goal-scorer on Saturday (January 21) when he scored a stoppage-time free-kick that rescued a point for his team against Stoke City and English news outlet The Sun has reported that the mega-rich CSL outfits are planning to take the United star to the far east.
The report claimed that the CSL clubs are ready to offer a staggering £1 million-a-week deal to the striker who has struggled for consistent first-team action this term.
The outlet also reported that the source in China are confident of signing the England star who does not feature prominently in United boss Jose Mourinho’s men.
As quoted in the daily, a source in China said: “There is a belief that Rooney might be allowed to leave United this summer, by which time he’ll have spent 13 years at the club and made more than 550 appearances.
“Even though he’ll have one year left on his contract, it’s a good time to go because he is now the top scorer in the club’s history.
“He would probably sign a two-year deal in China and will earn more in that time than he has done during the whole of his United career.
“It will be a big wrench for him and Coleen and their boys because they are very settled in Cheshire and Coleen, in particular, is very close to her family. The boys are happy at school.
“But they both know a footballer’s career is a short one and it would be silly for Wayne not to maximise his earning potential, especially as he’s approaching the latter stages of his career,” the source added.
The Red Devils are reportedly eyeing a world-record move for Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann and it is quite likely that if such a lucrative offer comes, they will sell Rooney who has not looked like a pale shadow of his former self in recent months.
