Confirmed: Man United defender joins Bundesliga club on loan
Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan from Manchester United.
The Premier League club announced on their website on Saturday morning that they had reached an agreement for the player to sign for the Bundesliga outfit until June 30, 2017.
Varela made his senior United bow in a goalless home draw against West Ham last December and made a total of 10 starts for the first team.
He also scored the title-clinching goal for the under-21s last season at Tottenham.
The 23-year-old came on as a substitute in Jose Mourinho’s first game in charge of United – a 2-0 friendly win at Wigan last weekend – but did not travel to China for their pre-season tour.
With Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all ahead of Varela in the right-back pecking order at United, Mourinho was willing to let the Uruguayan leave for the Bundesliga in order to find regular football. The loan is believed to be a permanent move in future.
Varela, who joined United in the summer of 2013 from Penarol, made 11 appearances under Louis van Gaal last season, but failed to figure after March following United’s Europa League exit to Liverpool.
He spent the 2014-15 season on loan with Real Madrid Castilla while in April 2016 he scored the goal that clinched the under-21 Premier League title for United.
Varela is a highly promising right-back with an immense amount of discipline and energy, which a season in Germany will only embolden and could yet play a crucial role under Mourinho in the future.
