Coutinho Vs Ozil: New Comparing Stats Show Who Is Leading The Way

The Premier League is currently blessed with some very talented number tens, from David Silva and Dele Alli to Dimitri Payet and Kevin de Bruyne.

However, given the latter’s recent injury problems, it can be argued that the two most impressive playmakers in the league this season have been Arenal’s Mesut Ozil and Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.

Both stars have been in outstanding form of late and, with that said, it’s no surprise to see their respective clubs topping the Premier League table on 23 points with Manchester City after ten rounds of games.

Arsene Wenger has primarily deployed Ozil as an orthodox number ten behind Alexis Sanchez, while Coutinho has typically operated from the left of a front three most frequently alongside summer signing Sadio Mane and compatriot Roberto Firmino.

So, given the fact that the 24-year-old Brazilian has appeared in every league match so far this season, while Ozil has played in nine of Arsenal’s ten league encounters, let’s compare them using some key stats to see who, statistically at least, is outperforming the other.

COUTINHO VS OZIL

The end product is very important for attacking players, and it’s Coutinho who marginally leads the way in terms of goals, having scored four times from his nine starts compared to three goals for Ozil from eight starts.

The 28-year-old German produced more assists (19) than any other Premier League player in the 2015-16 campaign, however, this season he has only set up one goal, whilst Coutinho has already provided an impressive four assists.

Continuing with the theme of creativity, and, according to Opta stats, it’s the Brazil international who again just gets the better of the World Cup winner, having created 25 chances to Ozil’s 22.

The two superstars love to get on the ball and dictate their team’s style of play, as proved by their stunning numbers with regards to passing and touches.

Coutinho has taken a massive 713 touches in the league this year, while Ozil has felt the ball on his feet on 685 occasions. However, the former Real Madrid man has produced 474 successful passes, which is 42 more than Jurgen Klopp’s main man.

Finally, in the modern game, even the most talented stars have the responsibility to work hard and see out their defensive duties, and Coutinho beats Ozil yet again in that respect.

The former Inter Milan youngster has made 15 tackles and recovered the ball for his team 49 times, whereas Ozil boasts figures of 5 and 36 respectively in those statistics.

So, whilst there is no doubt that both Ozil and Coutinho have been brilliant over the past few months, the stats suggest that the latter has been more impressive, but only time will tell if he can keep it up over the course of the season.
