In a surprising turn of events, Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy is set to sign for Ligue 1 side Bordeaux. This is according to French newspaper L’equipe

This move comes as a big surprise as Debuchy had been linked with moves to Aston Villa or Sunderland all this while but it appears that the French side has beaten them to his signature.

Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma were also reported to be possible destinations for the Frenchman but that will not been the case it seems.

Debuchy joined Arsenal from Newcastle in the summer of 2014 and had a difficult first-season which was plagued with injuries. But in spite of being fit this season Debuchy has featured just 7 times for Arsenal and has lost his place to Hector Bellerin.

Debuchy is desperate for more playing time in order to boost his chances of ,making the French squad for the EURO’s later this year and that is why he had been seeking an exit from the Emirates.

In his press conference earlier today, Arsene Wenger had stated that Debuchy might stay with the Gunners for the rest of the season as a move for the defender looked difficult but it seems that Debuchy has finally got his wish as the newspaper is reporting that Debuchy will join Bordeaux for the remainder of the season but without an option to buy.

Earlier today reports in England claimed that Manchester United were also looking to bring Debuchy on loan to ease their defensive problems with the Old Trafford outfit going through a terrible defensive crisis at the moment but now Van Gaal will have to look elsewhere. United have 5 defenders out with injuries and Debuchy would have certainly done a job for them.

Sources close to the French club had been saying that they were working on something special and the Debuchy move explains that. French newspaper L’equipe say that Wenger turned down United’s offer before sanctioning the move to Bordeaux. Of course, Wenger wouldn’t want to sell Debuchy to their direct rivals, as it didn’t turn out well the last time he tried doing that.
