Manchester United beat Arsenal and Tottenham to complete second summer signing
The three Premier League sides were hot on the trail of the French International, and United have stolen a march to clinch the £24 million capture, and will become the Old Traffford sides’ second summer signing.
Arsenal lowered their interest in one of their top targets after the stellar showing of the resurgent Francis Coquelin, while Spurs could not offer Champions League football which Schneiderlin craves for.
RESURGENT: The terrific showing of Coquelin convinced Arsenal against persuading Schneiderlin
The 25-year-old had hoped that his future would be resolved in the coming days. “The negotiations are ongoing and should be completed in the coming days, hopefully before the resumption of [Southampton’s preseason] training next week,” the former Strasbourg man had said.
The deal might also end their interest in Bayern Munich’s Germany World Cup-winner Bastian Schweinsteiger. The veteran had been linked with a possible England switch, but the recruitment of Schneiderlin will quell any further speculation.
Old Trafford officials are also pressing with a move for Real Madrid centre-half Sergio Ramos, who is unsettled in the Spain capital, while David de Gea’s future still remains in a doubt.
