DONE DEAL – Manchester United confirm signing of a world class defender until 2019
Manchester United defender Phil Jones has agreed to sign a 4-year extension to his current contract which will keep Jones at the club until 2019.
Having signed from Blackburn back in 2011 for a fee of £16.5million, Jones has become an integral part of Manchester United’s defense. Jones has featured in over 120 games for United and has been an assuring figure at the back for Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal.
Despite his unquestionable talent, Jones has failed to keep him fit for the entire length of a season since his arrival at Old Trafford. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why Van Gaal still needs a leader at the back and names like Sergio Ramos, Mats Hummels and Nicolas Otamendi are still being linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Jones was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson and was hailed as the future England captain seeing his unmatched skill and calmness on the field. Jones has proven the wise words of Sir Alec by being one of the best defenders in the league since his arrival.
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has hailed Jones’ decision to extend his contract with the club and has praised his versatility and professionalism.
Jones has expressed his delight at extending his contract and has put all the doubts about his old Trafford future to bed.
Jones said: “I am delighted to have signed a new deal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player.
“This a great club to be part of and I cannot wait to start the new campaign. I would like to thank the manager, coaching staff and fans for their continued support.”
