Dortmund, Nov 22 (IANS) German football giants Borussia Dortmund’s goalkeeper Roman Burki on Tuesday underwent a surgery on his broken hand, ruling the Swiss out for nearly two months.
The 26-year-old suffered the injury in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, but played the 90 minutes and the injury was detected on Sunday.
“Roman Bürki was operated today by Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Bauer in Klinikum Westfalen Brackel for a metacarpal fracture. The surgery was successful. We assume that Bürki will not be available for approx. 8 weeks. Get well soon, Roman!,” Dortmund wrote on Facebook.
Burki has made 15 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund this season.
German veteran Roman Weidenfeller will step in during Burki’s absence. The 36-year-old is set to play in Dortmund’s next seven games before the German winter break starts on December 20.
Weidenfeller, who has been at the club since 2002, will see his contract expire at the end of the current campaign but Thomas Tuchel’s side has discussed the possibility of extending the veteran goalkeeper’s contract for another season.
The German keeper has made 442 appearances for Dortmund, making him the second on the most appearance list behind sporting director Michael Zorc.
