Official: Former East Bengal star joins arch-rivals Mohun Bagan
Dudu Omagbemi, the crafty Nigerian footballer who donned red-and-gold shirt last season, is all set to change colors in the coming season. The striker will play for Mohun Bagan in the coming Kolkata Premier League. Mohun Bagan officials, after an hour-long discussion with team’s coach Sanjoy Sen on Wednesday, have decided to register Dudu, but for the Kolkata Premier League only. A decision has also been taken that Dudu’s contract will be extended if he can prove his fitness and form in the Kolkata Premier League this season. Along with Dudu, the club officials have also decided to register Kean Lewis and Robinson Singh. But Robinson, the teenager from Manipur is unlikely to get into the first team now. The officials at the same time, have also asked the team’s fitness trainer Garcia Miranda to bring Brazilian defender Gustavo Silva’s fitness into a perfect condition as early as possible. The remaining outstation footballers will soon be released.
Dudu, presently living in Finland, is naturally elated with the opportunity of playing in Kolkata for another year. More interestingly, the reason behind his happiness is that Dudu wants to show east Bengal that he is still an effective footballer. The red-and-gold management had already terminated his contract after the end of the last season in spite of the fact that this 30-year-old striker, playing from behind Ranti Martins in the last I League had fed at least fifty percent of the scoring passes to Martins.
Dudu himself had scored nine goals in 18 I League matches. The striker, speaking from Finland on Wednesday said, “Proving my quality within a span of only four months is a new challenge for me. And I am accepting it.” He added saying, “Last season, my performance was not shabby I feel. So, I know what to do and how to do.” Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen, in spite of appreciating Dudu’s ability and skill, wants to observe the player’s fitness minutely. He said, “I have no doubt on Dudu’s ability. Still I have to go through his fitness level.”
However, the Nigerian striker is unlikely to reach Kolkata by Mohun Bagan’s opening match in the Kolkata Premier League against on 9th of August. But he is expected to start in the team’s next matches.
