Misery piled upon Harry Maguire after humiliating game against Sevilla

Youssef En-Nesyri opened the score for Spain after Harry Maguire’s poor pass. Loic Bade extended Spain’s lead until another blunder, this time from goalkeeper David de Gea, allowing En-Nesyri to score his second goal of the night. After a 5-2 aggregate defeat, United’s Europa League dream is ended. But, as the fallout from the elimination unfolds, things have gotten worse for Maguire.

Things became worse for the visitors when Martial pulled off with an injury after 54 minutes. The French striker appeared to be unable to move properly following his unexplained blow, prompting manager Erik ten Hag to replace him with Wout Weghorst, who also struggled to make an effect.

Fans were left wondering what had happened to Martial, but one fan was quick to respond, sharing a video of United defending the set-piece from which Bade scored. And it appeared to show captain Maguire colliding with Marcel Sabitzer and another teammate as he attempted to clear the ball. Martial then collapses on top of Sabitzer, holding his foot. The Dutchman could have more problems with injuries as it is unclear now whether Martial features in their FA Cup semifinal against Brighton on Sunday.

United lost a two-goal lead from the first leg by allowing two late own goals, which were both disappointing and symptomatic of defensive frailty. That was ruthlessly exposed in Seville in the return leg, as United was knocked out of the tournament. De Gea’s hazardous pass to Harry Maguire in the early stages raised doubts about whether the Spaniard made the right decision.

Right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka appeared to have more space, only for Maguire to be fed by the keeper as the centre defender came under pressure from many opponents. This was mentioned by the commentators as well, although replays showed Maguire requesting the ball from De Gea. Of course, the decision to pass to the Leicester player was still the goalkeeper’s, but some felt it should be shared.

Maguire will have a day off on Sunday as United face Brighton in their FA Cup semi-final, but he could still be called up for the next league game against Tottenham. The defender has been suspended for the cup match, forcing manager Erik ten Hag to rely on a makeshift backline in the absence of injured stars such as Lisandro Martinez. However, the latest blunder once again raises questions on Harry Maguire’s future at Old Trafford, which looks bleak as the summer transfer window approaches.
