East Bengal to tie-up with Hoffenheim FC to strengthen its youth development
East Bengal Club, in an effort to strengthen its youth development programme in near future, is all set to make a tie-up with renowned German football club Hoffenheim FC. And the man behind all this initiative is Ranjan Chowdhury who was one of the most successful coaches in Tata Football Academy. Chowdhury, who was brought up in Germany and learned the basics of coaching in the country, was with a charge of Pune FC for last four years. And having joined East Bengal this month Chowdhury has already started working out on how the quality young footballers from Bengal can be nurtured and gifted to Indian football in near future. Chowdhury was in TFA for 21 years and under his care the football institute was able to produce several footballers like Carlton Chapman, Dipendu Biswas, Shankarlal Chakrabarty, Anit Ghosh, and Subrata Paul who had represented India in different championships.
Chowdhury, speaking on his mission, said, “We have already taken a ground on loan at the Salt Lake area. The construction of our residential hostel for the academy is underway. According to plans so far, 25 best-talented footballers from the age group between 13 and 16 will be able to stay there. But before they are selected, we will roam around the whole West Bengal to spot talented young footballers. Simultaneously, the district cities where we will go will also start satellite coaching centers in association with the club. And after the screening process from the district cities, 25 best-talented boys will be spotted for our central academy in Kolkata and they will be sent to Hoffenheim FC for not less than two months’ intensive training.”
Chowdhury revealed his mission is to turn East Bengal football academy into the best among the football schools in South-East Asia within next five years. He said, “It must be possible. But you need to have the patience to wait for the achievement.”
