EFL Cup Semifinal draw: Man United And Liverpool Avoid Each Other 1

Manchester United will take on Hull City in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, while Liverpool will face Southampton.

The draw makes it possible for the two north-west rivals to meet in February’s final at Wembley.

Jose Mourinho’s side progressed to the last four following their 4-1 home victory over West Ham United on Wednesday night.

Hull manager Mike Phelan, who made 102 appearances for United and spent 14 years at Old Trafford working as part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s backroom staff.

Southampton, meanwhile, secured a 2-0 away win at Arsenal to reach the last four of the competition for the first time since 1987.

Liverpool have fond memories of facing the Saints in the EFL Cup, having beaten them 6-1 at the quarter-final stage on the road to last season’s final.

Liverpool, winners of the cup a record eight times and finalists in 2016, had seen off Leeds on Tuesday evening with a 2-0 victory at Anfield where 17-year-old Ben Woodburn became the club’s youngest goalscorer.

United, on the other hand, beat West Ham 4-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, while Hull had needed penalties to get past Championship leaders Newcastle following extra-time in their tie on Tuesday.

The ties will be played over two legs, in weeks commencing January 9 and January 23.
