England coast past San Marino as Slovakia stun Spain
England beat lowly San Marino 5-0 but reigning European champions Spain suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Slovakia in the European Championship qualifiers.
Goals from Phil Jagielka, Andros Townsend, Danny Welbeck and a Wayne Rooney brace gave England a comfortable victory at an unusually quiet Wembley stadium as Switzerland lost their second consecutive game after being defeated 1-0 by Slovenia in Group E.
In the standout result of the night, Miroslav Stoch’s dramatic header three minutes from time gave Slovakia a memorable win over Spain after Valencia’s young striker Paco Alcacer had equalised with ten minutes still to play. It was Spain’s first defeat in the qualifiers of a major competition for eight years having last lost in 2006 to Sweden, a run that lasted 37 games.
Sweden and Russia shared the spoils after the hosts had missed a first half penalty and had to dig deep to equalise through Ola Toivonen after Aleksandr Kokorin had given the Russians a lead.
FYI Macedonia beat fellow Luxembourg 3-2 while Liechtenstein and Montenegro played out a goalless draw. David Alaba’s first half penalty helped Austria beat Moldova 2-1 while Lithuania beat ten-man Estonia 1-0.
