England take the third spot in Nations League, beating Switzerland on penalties
Jordan Pickford’s penalty heroics led England to the third spot in the inaugural UEFA Nations League.
England win the last tie of the UEFA Nations League campaign of 2019 against Switzerland to win the third spot. The match was long stretched as a 0-0 draw forced extra time which remained goal-less and went to a penalty shoot out.
Everton goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, once again came out as a match-winner for England in the penalties by striking and stopping one penalty each, winning his side the Bronze medal.
It definitely wasn’t England’s best run as they were favourites of winning the Nations League, however, only ended up clinching the third spot.

Gareth Southgate’s side suffered a knocking against Croatia in the semi-final of the FIFA World Cupand also lost the third place spot to Belgium, and yet again they could only get a third position in the Nations League with this young promising side.
The first half was dull and Sterling missed a sitter from a lovely cross by Alexander Arnold from the right flank.
Liverpool right back Alexander Arnold got to start ahead of Kyle Walker in the position and beautifully delivered. The UCL winner showed great crossing from the right flank connecting with Sterling, Alli and Kane but lacking a decisive finishing from the players.
Switzerland attacked more in the second half forcing saves from Jordan Pickford, with Granit Xhaka shooting at any chance opening for him.
In the 81th minute it looked like England had won the game with a Callum Wilson goal which only was cancelled by VAR due to a foul in the buildup play. England again had to play extra time football for the second time in 4 days.
The extra time action was thrilling with a left flank curler by Arnold leading to a Yann Sommer double save from Alli’s header and Sterling’s follow-up. Sterling came more closer to scoring when he got a close range free kick and hit the crossbar.
The penalty shoot out went long too as both teams took 5 perfect penalties, with Pickford stopping Josip Drmic’s penalty at last, winning the game.
