Euro 2016 top scorer reignites transfer speculations as he admits to watching United games
If you were to ask any Manchester United fan who they would most like to see arrive at Old Trafford, the majority would say Antoine Griezmann.
And there’s said to be plenty of interest on United’s side. According to the Manchester Evening News, Jose Mourinho is ready to make a move for the 25-year-old next year.
Having paid £89 million for one player already this year, United could be about to increase their world record.
Atletico Madrid’s recent transfer ban, which prevents them from signing players until 2018, complicates matters. But any decline in Atleti’s performances could convince Griezmann to force his exit.
If he does end up swapping the Vicente Calderon for Old Trafford, Griezmann will certainly know what to expect.
In an interview with L’Equipe, translated by Sport Witness, the Atleti forward admitted he often watches United games.
The reason why? To check out Paul Pogba, of course.
Griezmann’s bromance with Pogba is very much official.
The pair hung out together in Miami in the summer and Griezmann used the ‘Pogback’ hashtag ahead of his France teammate’s second Manchester United debut.
So when he’s not scoring for Madrid, Griezmann tunes into United games.
“We get on very well,” he is quoted as saying. “It is true that Euros has brought us closer together still. Paul is a really nice guy. He is it!
“We send messages, Snapchats. He’s really a good friend…When he plays with his club, I try to look at it to see if he had a good game or not.”
The Atletico Madrid star recently admitted the pair were brought together by the staunch criticism they both received following France’s laborious 2-1 win against Romania at Euro 2016.
L’Equipe were especially critical towards Pogba. The Man United midfielder allegedly made a gesture towards the press box after he made the assist for Dimitri Payet’s goal in a 2-0 win against Albania.
This adversity sparked the friendship, according to Griezmann.
“Pogba and I were brought closer by the French press,” he told Onda Cero. “Criticism after the Romania game made us friends.”
Griezmann would go on to call his compatriot a “genius” with the ball at his feet.
For any United fan that cannot wait for the possibility of watching Pogba and Griezmann together at United, France take on Bulgaria on Friday and the Netherlands three days later in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
