Everton

It has been a same story but at a different club for Frank Lampard at Everton. The former Chelsea manager was appointed as the Toffees’ manager in January last year, and could be ousted on its one-year anniversary. Its been exactly a year since Lampard took over at Everton, and the club has seen no progress, despite arming the 44-year-old with significant signings.

Everton have only gone from bad to worse under Lampard’s regime, and as a result, the club hierarchy could soon give him the axe. The club has struggled this season as well as they sit in relegation zone in the league, in the 18th place. With Lampard’s sacking most likely in coming weeks, Everton have lined up their legendary forward Wayne Rooney as his replacement according to talkSPORT, who currently is in charge of MLS side DC United.

Everton impressed with Rooney’s Derby spell

Rooney has been constantly proving his mettle in the managerial world ever since his first job at Championship side Derby County in the during his 18 month spell there from January 2021 to June 2022. The former Manchester United captain did an extraordinary job there, helping the club throughout their financial disaster during which he was forced to make do with the academy players and no new signings.

Moreover, Derby were also hit with a 21-point reduction but Rooney still steered them to a 17th place finish, avoiding relegation with 14 wins, 13 draws and 19 defeats. The England all-time [joint] topscorer literally worked miracles at Derby despite all the sanctions and punishments, without which he could have bought new players and even finished in the play-off positions.

He could now get the chance to do it at his boyhood club Everton, with all the funds and signings. The Toffees have backed Lampard with massive funds, spending over €100m in one year spell at the club, signing some important players like Vitaly Mykolenko, Idrissa Gueye, Neil Maupay, Amadou Onana and Conor Coady [on loan from Wolves]. However, all that investment has just churned out a mere 12 victories in Lampard’s 41 games in charge in all competitions.

He did save them from getting relegated last season, but again has them sitting in the relegation places this season with just 3 wins and a woeful 9 defeats from 18 league games. Moreover, there’s uncertainty whether he will be supplied with more funds for the ongoing winter market and even be sacked before the window shuts so that the club could plan one or two signings with the new man coming through the door.

This is Lampard’s second club as the manager where despite being made available with all the armoury in the transfer market and the backing from the club hierarchy, he has failed to deliver. His previous job at Chelsea saw him spend close to €250m and sign a number of stars such as Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell amongst others. His Everton job too seems to be going down the same path, and a sacking likely awaits at the end of it.
