Selhurst Park had its highest attendance on 11 May 1979 when they hosted Burnley for the most important match of their season. The Eagles needed a single point to gain promotion to the top-flight football. Three points meant Palace would finish as champions by overtaking Brighton and a loss meant Palace would remain in the Second Division. With 51,801 fans watching the game, Palace won the game 2-0 and secured the promotion.
