The Black Cats had their record attendance when they welcomed Liverpool on 13 April 2002. 48,335 fans gathered at the Stadium of Lights to see the match. But Liverpool forward Michael Owen spoiled the occasion for the home fans as his second half goal gave the Merseyside club a 1-0 win.
