FA Community Shield 2015: Arsenal edge past Chelsea 1-0
Arsene Wenger breaks Jose Mourinho Jinx in style as Arsenal beat rivals Chelsea to lift the FA Community Shield for second consecutive year. Gunners winger Alex oxlade-Chamberlain scored the only goal of the match in 24th minute which proved to decisive for Wenger’s men.
Chelsea were without their star striker Diego Costa due to injury concerns. Loic Remy started as the lone striker upfront. Spaniard Cesc Fabregas was fielded in a much attacking role as Ramires accompanied Nemanja Matic as defensive midfielder. Arsenal too followed their trademark 4-2-3-1 formation. Santi Cazorla played as a central midfielder beside Francis Coquelin. Aaron Ramsey played just behind the striker Theo Walcott who was prefered ahead of Olivier Giroud.
Arsenal played gorgeous football from the very beginning and amazed the fans. Chelsea on other hand played their style of football and concentrated more on midfield blocking. Loic Remy did not look convincing upfront as the team missed Diego Costa’s zeal inside the penalty box.
Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, when Alex Chamberlain followed a through ball from Theo Walcott. He recieved the ball inside the penalty box went passed Cesar Azpilicueta and curled a spectacular and unstoppable left footed shot which found the back of the net. Arsenal had the advantage at the stroke of half hour mark.
The teams went into the half time with the score board flaunting the result in favour of the FA Cup winners.
Jose Mourinho fielded Radamel Falcao in place of an ineffective Loic Remy in the second half. Oscar also took the field replacing Ramires. Mourinho was looking forward to attack now in the second period.
Chelsea bettered the quality of their game in the second half as they had to find a goal in order to restore parity. They attacked in numbers while Arsenal concentrated on defending their lead. The role reversed as Arsenal focused mostly on counter attacks.
Mourinho made his final substitution in Victor Moses who replaced John Terry, reducing Chelsea into a 3 man defense. Wenger on the other hand fielded an extra defender in Keiran Gibbs and substituted Mesut Ozil.
Eden Hazard missed the easiest chance of the afternoon when he blasted the ball above the goal from a one on one situation. Cesc Fabregas showed great vision as he forwarded a fantastic pass towards the Belgian.
Arsenal too came close to extend their lead but thanks to Thibaut Courtois’ bravery the lead never increased. Teh game finally ended and Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the pre-season continued.
