Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update regarding Chelsea’s next summer signing. The Blues have had a mixed summer market so far, acquiring some and missing some of their priority targets. However, they are on the verge of completing a fifth signing of their summer in Brighton’s Marc Cucurella.
According to Romano, Chelsea have sealed a deal with Brighton for their left-back who could arrive at the Stamford Bridge by the end of this week. Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has demanded defensive reinforcements after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. While center-back Kalidou Koulibaly has been signed, more incomings are likely to take place before the market closes.
Chelsea beat Manchester City to Marc Cucurella
Chelsea emerged as surprise destination for Cucurella after the Spaniard was set to sign for Manchester City. The Premier League champions wanted him to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko who joined Arsenal this summer. However, Brighton’s mammoth asking price of £50 million forced City to back out from a possible deal.
While City were ready to table only as much as £40 million for Cucurella, Chelsea have jumped the line with a bid of £55 million. As per Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have locked in a deal for the left-back for £55m which could reach up to £62m with the £7m add-ons.
Taking it to Twitter, the Italian revealed, “Chelsea and Brighton have been preparing contracts in the night in order to get Marc Cucurella deal signed on Friday. Medical was perfect and Thomas Tuchel is now waiting for him. #CFC. Fee confirmed as advanced earlier: £55m guaranteed plus £7m in add-ons to Brighton.”
Chelsea have been reportedly desperate to land Cucurella since their left-back Marcos Alonso could leave in the next few days. Alonso is poised to join Catalan giants FC Barcelona as he seeks a return to his homeland of Spain. Reporting for the same, Romano wrote:
“Barcelona want Marcos Alonso as soon as possible. Talks ongoing on clubs side to find way with Chelsea, Alonso’s priority target since May and already agreed personal terms with Barça months ago. Alonso hopes to Chelsea to leave this summer due to personal reasons.”
Cucurella would now become Chelsea’s fifth summer signing after the club welcomed Raheem Sterling from Man City, Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, and young blood in Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa and Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire.
