Fans were taken aback when a pundit appeared to refer to Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano as ‘Upamaguire’ during the Bavarian side’s Champions League match against Manchester City. Bayern played City at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night knowing they would need a miracle to overcome a 3-0 deficit against Pep Guardiola’s team.

During a tense first half, City were granted a golden opportunity to seal the tie when Upamecano was unfairly ruled to have handled Ilkay Gundogan’s attempt. Erling Haaland, on the other hand, missed the penalty kick since his shot went over the crossbar. However, Haaland had the last laugh as Manchester City defeated Bayern Munich to advance to the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid.

Fans react as commentator calls Bayern Munich defender Upamecano ‘Upamaguire’

Manchester City ultimately broke the deadlock in the second half when Kevin De Bruyne found Haaland with an inch-perfect pass. The Norwegian striker sat down Upamecano before slamming the ball into Yann Sommer’s net. However, the Bayern Munich centre-back’s struggles prevailed throughout the 90 minutes as his side go knocked out for the tournament.

Earlier in the game, City attempted to retaliate against Bayern Munich’s constant press with their own onslaught, and when Kevin De Bruyne glided through Haaland shortly after Sane’s miss at the other end, the Allianz Arena held its breath. Upamecano was tracked down the former Dortmund player and sent him tumbling with a clumsy challenge, leaving referee Clement Turpin with just one option to flash a red card at him.

Fortunately for Upamecano, VAR ruled that Haaland was slightly offside when De Bruyne’s pass came through, and the red card was revoked. Despite later scoring from the penalty spot, Bayern were eliminated from the Champions League by an aggregate score of 4-1.

However, during the game, an Arabic commentator appeared to call Upamecano ‘Upamaguire,’ referring to Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, whose performances have been scrutinised. Fans reacted quickly on social media.
