Arsenal hosted Newcastle United at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon in their first game of the new year, as they looked to continue to build on their good form and extend their lead on top of the points table. The Premier League encounter did not produce any goals in the first half, though there were quite a few good chances to both sides.
Both the Gunners and Steve McClaren’s side had no interest in dropping any points and were keen on scoring some goals on the night. Arsene Wenger’s side had the backing of the home fans and were looking to push for goals, as they had no intention of losing their top spot. However, both sides went into the break at a stalemate.
The second half began with more chances to each side, as they tried to look to find an opening goal in the game. Further, it was the hosts that took the lead in the 72nd minute of the game when Laurent Koscielny scored from a volley. There were no more goals in the game, as the visitors pushed for an equalizing goal, yet failed to finish off their chances with a few saves by Petr Cech as well.
Eventually the match ended in a 1-0 win to Arsenal, which would have surely pleased the French manager, as his side were able to hold on to the narrow win over the Magpies.
On the other hand, with Leicester City dropping a couple of points, after their 0-0 draw with Bournemouth, it gave the north London side the opportunity to extend their lead on top of the league table.
Still on top of the table. I can now sleep without clothes!!! #COYG
