Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard officially announced his retirement from the game on Thursday (November 24). One of the finest players to grace the Premier League, the mid-fielder was Liverpool’s longest-ever serving captain as he made 710 appearances for the Merseyside outfit.
Making his debut in 1998, Gerrard scored 186 goals and won eight major trophies-FA Cup twice (2001, 2006), the League Cup thrice (2001, 2003, 2012), the UEFA Cup once (2001), and the historic Champions League in 2005, before joining the MLS outfit LA Galaxy in 2015.
“Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football,” Gerrard confirmed in a statement on Thursday. “I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy.”
Tributes have been pouring in ever since the legendary footballer made his announcement but some fans used the opportunity to troll the former England international. While some Manchester United fans have said Paul Scholes was better than him, some Chelsea fans made sure to talk about Gerrard’s slip in 2014, which allowed Demba Ba to score that effectively, cost Liverpool the title.
