Fellaini’s illness provides opportunity for others at Manchester United
At the start of the year, if anyone had said that United will miss the injured Fellaini, everyone would have laughed in their faces. Fast forward 12 months – Fellaini now looks like an immovable force in the teams starting lineup.
After being tipped to leave the club in the summer, Fellaini’s late injury prevented him from completing a move to the Naples. When he returned from injury, the big Belgian had to fight for his pride from the bench.
Against West Bromwich Albion, he scored a goal within minutes after coming on as a half time substitute. Thus started the Big Belgians revolution. He carried the same form into Chelsea to bag the man of the match award.
Since then, Fellaini has had a permanent place in United’s starting lineup. Fellaini has started the last eight games, which is his best run since arriving from Everton for 27.5 million last summer.
But, Louis Van Gaal in pre-match press conference has confirmed that Fellaini is unavailable for the trip to Villa Park because of illness. Dutchman said: “We have five injuries and Fellaini is ill so they are not coming up.”
Now its time for other players to follow Juan Mat’s recipe by using this chance to cement a place in the team lineup. When Di Maria got injured, the Spaniard made the most of his chances to make a name for himself in the starting lineup.
The likes of Ander Herrera, Darren Fletcher and the forgotten Anderson should make use of this opportunity. Herrera after having a good preseason was never able to transfer that form into the premier league because of his constant injuries.
So with him back fit, Herrera will want to win back the place from Fellaini. Fletcher on the other hand has been dropped from the starting line up for no fault of his own. The Scot has been at the club for several years but, has never been a regular for the club.
Fletcher has been called to fill in multiple positions in the team to make up for the spaces left by either injured or suspended players. The Scot has never complained about it and has always managed to give his best when called upon. So now being a vice captain of the club, Fletcher would like to have an extended run in the team sheet.
Fellaini, who is currently enjoying the form of his life with United will be hoping to recover from this illness as soon as possible to prevent his place being captured by other players. Also with Roma midfielder Strootman’s name regularly linked with the Reds in January, he does not want to be out of the squad for too long.
