FIFA World Cup 2018: Aleksandar Kolarov Proved to be Difference in Serbia’s Win Over Costa Rica
A well taken free kick from Serbia’s Aleksandar Kolarov proved to be vital for their essential win against Costa Rica in FIFA World Cup 2018.
Both the teams did not play to their potential, as the match was scrappy all the way through.
The Serbians were very threatening in the opening half but could not make the most of their chances. Meanwhile, Costa Rica would rue their missed opportunities as well.
In only the second minute, Marcos Urena had a clear shot on the goal, but Vladimir Stojkovic made a decent save.
Also, Gonzalez had a much clear chance at goal but once again faltered. As the match progressed, Serbia grew in confidence and got better.
This has led to Keylor Navas making a couple of good saves to keep Costa Rica in the game.
Both the teams had their plans working perfectly until half-time. Once the second half began, there was more urgency in Serbia’s attacking build up.
Keylor Navas was called into action multiple times, but he made some good saves.
However, a great free kick from Kolarov put Serbia in front in this decisive match. Despite a full stretch, Keylor Navas was unable to save the perfect 25-yard free kick from Kolarov. Costa Rica’s substitute Bolanos was quickly into the action.
He put in a couple of wonderful crosses to ensure Costa Rica remained creative in the attack despite not having the lead. Although the match seemed to be a low key affair for Serbia, they were sloppy throughout.
On the other hand, the loss to Costa Rica meant their chances for progressing into next round remains bleak. They will next face Brazil, and a win against the Samba boys would be a huge task for Costa Rica.
Meanwhile, Serbia will next face against Switzerland in a virtual knock out match. A win in this game would see Serbia in the knock out stages.
