FIFA World Cup 2018: Gimenez’s Extra Time Winner Earns Three Points for Uruguay
An extra-time winner by José Giménez had saved the day for group favourites, Uruguay in their match against Egypt on Saturday.
The win meant La Celeste win important three points after Russia’s emphatic 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia earlier. Also, this is Uruguay’s first win in their first match of a World Cup after six editions.
The South American team had dominated from the start but could not find a way through. Despite not having the attacking flair of Mohammed Salah in their lineup, Egypt were quite good at keeping Uruguay silent for large parts of the game.
Both the sides have exchanged blows until half-time. Luis Suarez was sloppy in the first half missing a golden opportunity, as he sliced a clear chance to the side netting. As the game went on, Egypt continued to be more assertive in the attacking as well.
The African nation played some good attacking football since the start of the second half.
Egypt’s goalkeeper, El-Shenawy had been extraordinarily good to keep Uruguayan’s attempts at bay. Despite some very good football, Egypt lacked the final ball which proved to be the ultimate difference.
Egypt Crumble in final minutes
During the middle minutes of the second half, both sides looked tired, and the match was more open. Uruguay’s Muslera was quite impressive in goal as well to ensure the game remained goalless.
However, the inexperience showed in the end, like Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani continued to press the centre-backs of Egypt. As the match went to the latter stages, Uruguay just upped the ante and dramatically won the game.
An inch-perfect delivery from Carlos Andrés Sánchez from a free kick was met with a powerful head of Jose Gimenez to win their tournament opener for Uruguay.
Despite the loss, Egypt can keep their heads high after their impressive performance.
Ultimately the changes made by Uruguayan manager, Óscar Tabárez paid dividends. On the other hand, Egypt will be very confident with their performance and should consider themselves favourites for the games against Saudi Arabia and Russia.
