Foreign ownership ‘real danger’ to European football- Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has urged English clubs to fight against breakaway from Champions League as increased foreign ownership becomes a ‘real danger’ for European football.

Recently La Liga president Javier Tebas has backed Chinese idea for a World Super League as the clubs across Europe are concerned over the wealth of English clubs which is having a significant impact during the transfers.

Javier Tebas has admitted that they are looking to break away from Champions League as they look for a new league which provides “greater opportunity to generate more revenue.” Tebas have made the statement after UEFA failing to address their concerns with respect to broadcasting rights.

When asked about the incident, Wenger commented: “You do not want to [become] like boxing where you have five federations and five different ways of acting, and you do not know anymore who is the real world champion.

“It’s important that we stay unified and that we play football with the same rules. Especially if you look to the future, we might go for video [replays]. It’s quite complicated. It’s important that we keep the whole thing together.”

The influence of Chinese investors in European football is growing rapidly over the past few years as they are buying stakes at football clubs all over Europe. Wenger feels this could lead to an anger where the owners could opt for their own league with their interests and the football governing bodies should take control over the whole system.

“It’s a real danger. Because if tomorrow we have 10 South American or 10 Chinese who own 10 of the 20 English clubs, they can say: ‘Let’s make a league and play some games on our continent,” Wenger said.

“It’s a danger. That’s why I personally will always fight that UEFA keeps control and that FIFA keeps control of the whole system.”
