Former Liverpool and Chelsea full-back has backed the Reds’ potential front three to get the best results in the upcoming Premier League season. Liverpool recently outclassed their arc rivals Manchester City 3-1 in the Community Shield, thanks to the goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and record signing Darwin Nunez.
However, Johnson has snubbed the likes of attacking potent Manchester City posses as well. The former England international picked up the trio Jurgen Klopp would probably field in the Premier League next season. Liverpool have replaced Sadio Mane with big-money signing Darwin Nunez who could now start alongside Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah. Johnson opines that would become the most ‘dynamic’ attacking triad in the league.
Johnson, Dunne have their say on who has the best attack in the Premier League
Liverpool are blessed with abundance of options in the attack going into the next season, with the additions of Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho to the pack of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino. Though Nunez has a lot of competition for that starting spot in the middle, his bill of £85 million should see him get more opportunities to justify it.
Talking to Betway, Johnson who made almost 200 appearances for Liverpool said, “I’m doing it without [Erling] Haaland based on he hasn’t done anything yet. Nunez is my gamble, [Luis] Diaz is top class, [Mohamed] Salah probably the best striker in the league. If Nunez can get it right in the league, I think that front three will be more dynamic than the others until Haaland performs.”
While Diaz and Salah are proven gems of the Premier League, Nunez will have a lot to prove in his debut season. However, he can take a lot of inspiration from his former rival at Porto Luis Diaz who became an instant hit at Anfield after signing in January this year. Diaz notched up 4 goals and 3 assists in just 13 league games, while Salah amassed a whopping 23 goals and 14 assists in 35 games.
Former Manchester City defender Richard Dunne too was present when Johnson named the Liverpool trio as best attacking talent in the league right now. The City legend however disagreed with his fellow panelist and picked his best attack currently present in the Premier League.
Dunne claimed, “[Phil] Foden is an unbelievable footballer, Jack Grealish is going to improve massively this year then you add in Erling Haaland. I don’t think Nunez is going to have the same impact as Haaland.” Both the Liverpool and City legends have made their claims, but only the next season will tell who outranks the other.
