Belgian FA president Francois De Keersemacker said that if Former Netherlands and Man United manager Louis van Gaal applies for the Belgian management job, he will be considered as one of the potential targets to replace former Belgium manager Marc Wilmots, who has been sacked shortly.
Ex-Man United boss Louis van Gaal, who managed Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Ajax and also Netherlands’ national team twice, is currently available after being sacked by Manchester United last season.
Belgian FA president Francois De Keersemacker told reporters on Friday: “Van Gaal might be a potential candidate. We will see if he puts himself forward as a candidate. If he does then we will evaluate his candidacy.”
Van Gaal might not be that good with clubs, but having carried Netherlands to the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil makes him a tough contender for the Belgium job according to the Belgian FA’s technical director Chris van Puyvelde. Chris wants the ex-Red Devils’ boss to manage Netherlands and have experience at the international stage too.
In a news conference, Van Puyvelde said: “It’s an open process; I expect my mailbox is going to be flooded [with applications],”
“We want a candidate to have experience and to have already achieved results in international football. He must play modern football.
“He must show tactical acumen and flexibility to adapt because no one game or no opponent are ever the same. He must also deliver a high-performance environment because the players he is working with are used to working at a high level.
“We have a special generation and they need to be allowed to also take decisions of their own.”
