Former Manchester United forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has offered himself to club to lead their languishing attack. The Mexican, who currently plays for MLS side Los Angeles has further vowed to do so for free for the Red Devils. Chicharito became a cult player in his five years at the Old Trafford, out of which he spent one season at loan with Real Madrid.
The striker then took-off to the United States bringing an end to his European journey in the winter of 2020. Chicharito also plied his trade for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham and Sevilla before signing for Los Angeles. The 34-year-old has since scored an impressive 29 goals in 58 appearances for the MLS side. Chicharito now aspires to return to Europe, only if his former club Man United needs him.
‘Yes, I’ll play for free’ says the former Manchester United man
Chicharito was signed by Manchester United in 2010, unearthing him from Mexican side Chivas. An Alex Ferguson signing, Chicharito went on to feature in 157 games for United, scoring an impressive 59 goals and assisting 20. He also won two Premier League titles with the club, the first in his debut season of 2010/11 and then in 2012/13 season.
However, Chicharito made only 85 starts at the club, often coming-off the bench to score bangers for the club which earned him the label of ‘super-sub’ under Sir Alex Ferguson. The striker has once again confessed that he is ready to take up a similar role at the club under Erik ten Hag to help them out of their attacking crisis.
The forward recently said, “If United came for me then I’d say ‘yes, I’ll play for free.’ Of course, you know, I’d do that. But I also want to be very respectful to my club. I am playing very consistently and in my mind my conviction is all about winning a championship with LA Galaxy. In the future, if things happen then they happen – but in my mind, I am 100 percent with LA.”
United are currently on the hunt of a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo has remained firm on his decision to quit the club. His stance sent the club into a panic mode which saw them bid for West Ham flop Marko Arnautovic who currently plays for Bologna.
However, the Italian side rejected United’s offer and the club is now searching for a new man to lead their attack. While the thought of signing Hernandez apparently hasn’t crossed United’s mind yet, he could be a gamble worth taking rather than someone in Arnautovic who was in China for three years before joining Bologna last season.
