Former Real Madrid manager favourite if and when Jose Mourinho is sacked
Chelsea are considering the interim appointment of former Tottenham and Real Madrid manager Juande Ramos if the club decides to sack Jose Mourinho, according to The Times Sport.
Juande Ramos, who guided Tottenham to the 2008 League Cup win defeating Avram Grant’s Chelsea in the final, is right now out of work after he left Ukrainian club Dnipro last season.
According to The Times Sport, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is still reluctant to axe Mourinho despite a devastating run of form which has left the Blues only one point above the relegation zone with nine defeats in 16 league encounters. The Russian owner’s instinct has always been to keep supporting the man who brought the Premier League title back to Stamford Bridge last term and signed a new four-year contract in August.
However, the media outlet also suggests Ramos, once managed Real Madrid, and has emerged as a surprising contender to take charge at Stamford Bridge, along with Dutch manager Guus Hiddink who won the FA Cup in as interim manager for Chelsea in 2009.
The Times also claim Jose Mourinho’s future has been discussed by the Chelsea board on Wednesday, with debate going on, whether to sack the Portuguese or give him another chance to manage the depleted team against Sunderland at the weekend.
Roman Abramovich and the rest of club’s hierarchy are confused how long they can afford to wait for things to turn around. They are now 20 points behind league toppers Leicester and 14 off the Champions League places, with an important last-16 clash with PSG looming large.
The other dilemma is whether to deprive a manager with a proven track record of success the opportunity to turn things around – and the January transfer window may provide that chance.
The Times’ story certainly comes as a real shock, although Abramovich was fearless and ready to gamble when he appointed Grant as a caretaker manager and also appointed Rafa Benitez in the 2012-13 campaign, as neither of them would have been the choice of supporters.
Juande Ramos, for all his success at Sevilla where he won the UEFA Cup twice, would be a similarly not so favourable choice as his reputation has completely diminished after failed stints with Tottenham and Real Madrid.
