Manchester City completed a historic treble on Saturday night (June 10) after winning the UEFA Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Inter Milan. Winning a treble is considered one of the toughest jobs in football and it is not surprising at all that only a handful of teams have managed to do it.
What is a treble in football:
For those who are new to football or do not know what a treble is, it basically means winning three trophies in a season. Typically the trophies are – the domestic league, a secondary domestic trophy and the continental championship.
The Premier League clubs play for three domestic trophies – the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup (League Cup). On the other hand, top flight teams in Germany, France, Italy and most of the countries in Europe usually play for two domestic trophies. A team is said to have won a continental treble only if they win their league, their main national cup competition and the main continental competition.

List of teams who have won the treble in football:
Like mentioned earlier, winning a treble is one of the toughest tasks in the game and it is absolutely not surprising that only eight teams in Europe have managed to win the continental treble so far. The teams are -Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Celtic, Inter, Manchester United, Manchester City and PSV.
Barcelona and Bayern Munich are the only teams to have achieved the feat twice. Barcelona’s first treble came in 2008-09 season before they repeated the feat in the 2014-15 season. On the other hand, Bayern Munich did it in 2012-13 and 2019-20 seasons.
