Deniz Aytekin, the referee in charge of Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain, could find himself in hot waters for his performance during the Champions League game at Camp Nou.
Luis Enrique’s men staged one of the most sensational comebacks in the history of the continental championship on Wednesday, overturning a four-goal deficit -to advance to the quarter-finals. However, the game was marred by some poor referring decisions.
The German official has been facing the flak for awarding the home team two questionable penalties which played a big role in the remarkable turnaround. The first penalty was given five minutes after the restart when Thomas Meunier was deemed to have brought down Neymar in the box. The PSG defender was actually trying to scramble to the ball but his head appeared to knock the Barcelona forward off his feet. However, the referee did not award the penalty straight away but changed his mind after a brief discussion with his assistant.

The decision looked a fine one but another decision towards the fag end of the regulation time has raised a lot of eyebrows. Luis Suarez, who was booked for simulation in the 67th minute, went down in the area under minimal contact from Marquinhos and the referee did not hesitate in pointing his fingers towards the spot.

There were some other questionable decision’s too and Spanish news outlet Marca has claimed Aytekin could be facing a spell on the sidelines for his performance.
The report further claimed that Pierluigi Collina, UEFA’s head of refereeing, will decide the German referee’s fate. Meanwhile, the news outlet reported that Aytekin is unlikely to officiate another Champions League fixture this season. However the governing body won’t strictly punish Aytekin, although he could find himself demoted to lesser profile games for the time being or simply removed from action for a specific period.
