Gerrard’s Open Letter Drops Massive Hint On His Future After Latest Career Decision

Just a day after Frank Lampard announced he would be leaving New York City FC at the end of the season, another one of MLS’ big stars has confirmed he will also be on the move.

Fellow former England international Steven Gerrard has joined Lampard as a free agent after LA Galaxy released a statement on Tuesday to confirm the ex-Liverpool captain would not be extending his stay in California beyond the current season.

Galaxy were dumped out of the MLS Cup last week after losing to Colorado Rapids in the playoffs on penalties – as a result of Ashley Cole’s final spot-kick miss – and Gerrard did hint that he could retire following the defeat.

However, while his immediate future will not be in Los Angeles, where Gerrard will end up next remains a mystery.

In an open letter published on LA Galaxy’s official website and the 36-year-old’s Instagram account, Gerrard didn’t categorically state he had retired from playing but alluded to the fact he would spend some time considering ‘the next stage of his career’.

Gerrard also revealed that his main ambition upon arriving in America was winning the MLS Cup and admitted his disappointment at not being able to achieve that goal.

Here is the full heartfelt letter:

“Over the last year and a half, it has been a privilege to represent the LA Galaxy and play in front of this club’s great fans.

“When I left Liverpool, I came to Los Angeles with the goal of helping the LA Galaxy lift another MLS Cup. I am very disappointed to have not achieved that objective, but I can look back at my time at the club with pride at what we accomplished, including two straight playoff appearances and countless memorable moments on the pitch.

“I have loved every minute of my time in the States and playing for the LA Galaxy. I am excited to see this league and this great club continue to grow.

“As someone who spent the whole of their career in Liverpool, it has been an incredible experience to come to Los Angeles and play for the LA Galaxy. I would like to thank Mr. Anschutz, Dan Beckerman, Chris Klein and Bruce Arena for this opportunity. I would also like to thank my teammates, the coaching staff, the team staff and each and every supporter for their support since I arrived at this club.

“To the Galaxy fans at StubHub Center, it has been an honor to play in front of you. From my debut against San Jose to my final match in Colorado, you have shown me amazing support and I will never forget that. I am excited to continue to support the Galaxy going forward and I look forward to seeing you all again in Los Angeles soon.

“Los Angeles will always have a special place in my heart. As I depart, I want to thank everyone at the club for making my time here so memorable for me and my family.

“Thank you and go Galaxy.”

Naturally, Gerrard has been linked with a return to Liverpool in a coaching capacity but only time will tell just how willing the midfielder is to hang up his boots.

Any ex-player will tell him: ‘you are a long time retired’ so rushing into such a decision is ill-advised.

Particularly when he is likely to still receive offers to extend his playing days for another season or so.

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are just one side thought to have some interest but ultimately, the choice Gerrard has to make is if he wants his final memory of playing football being the image of Ashley Cole missing a penalty – we’d suggest not.
