Griezmann Casts Doubt On Potential Manchester United Deal
According to one or two media outlets in England recently, the only thing missing from Antoine Griezmann’s move to Manchester United is the player waving the scarf above his head in Old Trafford.
Various reports over the past few weeks have suggested that personal terms have already been agreed over a potential move for the French international at the end of the season – but everything Griezmann himself has said so far seems to suggest the opposite.
From reaffirming his commitment to Atlético Madrid and Diego Simeone to angrily demanding that his future not be discussed in the middle of the season, the French international isn’t interested in discussing Man United (in public at least).
Speaking to French radio station RMC on Tuesday evening, Griezmann has now claimed that potential media invasion and bad weather would be two major stumbling blocks for any potential move to the Premier League. He also dismissed the notion of playing in the Bundesliga or Ligue 1 in his native France:
“With Real Sociedad, I felt that I needed to leave. For the moment, I do not have that need or desire.
“Who knows how the season will finish. If it finishes badly, maybe I will ask myself the question. For the moment, it is not relevant.
“I am asking myself where I could go. In Spain, there is Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Barcelona have the three [Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez] up top. Real Madrid, that is impossible because of the club I am at. I think that between [Real and Atlético], there is a pact.
“Germany, the league does not attract me much. France, not for the moment.
“And England, I have a lot of doubts about my private life. Everything like rain, bad weather… I need to feel happy outside.”
While that by no means completely shuts the door on a move to England in the summer, it does imply that the deal is nowhere as far along as some have been suggesting. Indeed, Man United (or whoever wants to spend the €100m on him in the summer) are going to have to be very persuasive to get the 25-year-old on board in the summer.
