Manchester United and Barcelona have been dealt a fresh heartbreak in their dogged pursuit of midfield dynamo İlkay Gündoğan, whose agent has stated that the German is going to extend his contract with the 2012 Bundesliga champions, as new Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel has been impressed with Gündoğan’s ability and presence in his team’s midfield.

The German international had continuously played a will-he-won’t-he drama regarding his future at Dortmund. He had earlier said that he would leave this summer, after the exit of former manager Jürgen Klopp, and not having won any major silverware in the past 3 seasons. Clubs from England and Spain, notably Manchester United and Barcelona have pursued Gündoğan ever since the recent club season was concluded. However, İlhan Gündoğan, the footballer’s agent, who is also his uncle, has stated that his nephew has been thinking about staying at Dortmund.

On the topic of his nephew’s contract extension, İlhan Gündoğan said to Sueddeutsche Zeitung, “This is clearly an option again. There are several things in favour of Ilkay finding back to his old level and doing that in a familiar, comfortable environment.”

This could even be a transfer manoeuvre by the Dortmund board, who are hoping to cash in as much amount as possible. İlkay Gündoğan currently earns €56,000 per week at Dortmund. It might take a huge rise in wage for Dortmund to retain Gündoğan, as Manchester United and Barcelona are ready to pounce with a fat pay-check on the midfielder. Gündoğan might yet change his mind, as playing in the Europa League is not as fanciful and ambitious compared to hunting for Champions League glory.
