Gustavo Silva's future in Mohun Bagan looks uncertain
The future of Gustavo Silva, the Brazilian defender of Mohun Bagan seems uncertain all of a sudden after the player, though only 12 minutes, has failed to impress Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen in his show in the Kolkata Premier League at Barasat Stadium on Tuesday.
Gustavo, in spite of being registered by the club officials for the Kolkata Premier League, has been struggling to regain full fitness since joining the team a couple of weeks ago. And the defender was played in the striker’s position by Mohun Bagan coach on Tuesday at Barasat Stadium against Army Eleven. Mohun Bagan lost the all important match by a goal. In the post-match conference, Sanjoy Sen clarified, “I played a gamble with Gustavo by asking him to play as a striker with a last hope of equalizing the scoreline. So, I should not comment on the defender only after watching him in the striker’s position. But I feel he needs still a few more days to regain fitness.”
Mohun Bagan coach also defended the club officials saying, “It was not only the officials who roped in Gustavo. I was there and along with me the club’s technical committee members, comprising the former three international footballers, were there to watch the video clippings of five foreign footballers. Among those five footballers we choose Gustavo and the decision were unanimous.”
Commenting on Gustavo’s future in Mohun Bagan, Mohun Bagan coach clarified, “The club officials have already been in search of a quality defender, even after Judelin Aveska, the Haitian defender who is likely to arrive at the end of this week. And if anyone out of those defenders looks impressive then he will be signed. In that case, Gustavo might be released by the club officials.”
Incidentally, Mohun Bagan’s hopes winning the Kolkata Premier League after a gap of five years seem to be fading away after the team’s crucial defeat at the hands of Army Eleven on Tuesday. Mohun Bagan is now in a do-or-die situation as the team has to win its all the five remaining matches, including the derby against arch-rivals East Bengal, to keep themselves in the title race. Mohun Bagan coach, commenting on this issue, said on Tuesday, “After the match, I have asked my boys whether can make an oath of winning the team’s next five matches. The footballers also have promised me that they would deliver their best in the remaining matches. Otherwise, we are truly in a tough situation.”
Mohun Bagan is on the fifth position in the Kolkata league table after having garnered eight points from five matches. East Bengal, being on the top of the table, has garnered 13 points in as many matches.
