The photo – published in the Daily Mail – was taken less than a fortnight after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp criticised United’s style of play under Mourinho, suggesting that the Red Devils were overusing the long boy in a tiresome manner.
“It is so intense. They play long balls, it was a wild game,” Klopp told The Mirror following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Klopp was then branded a hypocrite by fans a week later when he stuck centre-back Joel Matip up front for the final throws of Liverpool’s 3-2 home defeat to Swansea City.
However, it is unlikely that Mourinho’s car snooze has anything to do with long balls. The Portuguese is still living in a hotel, which must surely stop being relaxing after a while.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s iconic former manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Jose Mourinho is taking the Old Trafford club in the right direction.
Ferguson won 38 major trophies in a 26-year spell in charge of United, including 13 English Premier League titles.
On his retirement at the end of the 2012-13 season, United went through a fallow period under David Moyes and then Louis Van Gaal, before Mourinho took over in the summer of 2016.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Ferguson, 75, said Mourinho had “got to grips” with the size of the job involved in turning United around.
United travels to the KCOM Stadium on Thursday defending a 2-0 lead from the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, as it seeks its second trophy of Mourinho’s time in charge.
