The biggest mystery of Premier League 2015-16 season solved
This season, the Barclays Premier League has been more entertaining than most of the domestic leagues across Europe. Top clubs in the league have dropped points too constantly while clubs from the bottom half of the table has done extremely well to keep the top clubs at bay. In the previous season, Chelsea and Jose Mourinho were hardly beaten on their way to the title but this season, the title race has not yet heard its gun shot.
In a traditional Premier League season at this time, two or three club fight for the top spot while 3 other clubs fight for the final place in the top four. But this season, going into the busy festive schedule, more than 4 teams are vying for the top of the table while almost 5 other teams are fighting for a place in the top 4.
Such has been the competition this season between clubs in the league. The financial status of the top 5 clubs is not yet matched by the weaker franchises but the quality in the squad is un-doubted. In this article, we will take a look at the realistic chance of sides which are in the title race.
The top 3 clubs at the moment in the table are Leicester City, Arsenal and Manchester City in that order. Leicester City has been splendid this season so far and without any cup commitments look like a team that can keep their winning momentum for weeks to come.
However, they are not real title contenders as a series of tough fixtures or an injury to a key player can easily see them lose out in the race to the top. Arsenal on the other hand has been rejuvenated this season and has been playing some smart football off late. They are one of the most consistent sides in the Premier League in the last few seasons and in the present situation are title favorites. Their journey is usually hampered by injuries at this time of the year and Wenger has had to deal with the same problem yet again.
He has a relatively strong squad and if the manager can keep the players fit for long periods, they have a realistic chance of lifting the Premier League title after more than 10 years. They are in close proximity to Manchester City who were the clear favorites to win the title at the beginning of the season.
City made some supreme transfers in the summer and has one of the strongest squads in Europe. They have a dynamic group of players that give the manager different options against different clubs in different situations. They have also suffered injuries to key players but have the depth in the squad to cope with the injuries.
However, even they have dropped points this season against weaker opponents and this gives an outside chance to teams like Manchester United. United’s squad and style of play is far from a title winning team but the quality in the squad and the manger’s experience may come into play deep into the business end of the tournament. They have also suffered injuries to first team players and need to have all their players fit to launch a realistic title challenge this season.
But United have lacked the spark needed up front to be named a title winning side and will have to improve two fold before entertaining the thoughts of a Premier League trophy. This leaves the Tottenham Hotspurs with a slight outside chance to actually go all the way in the Premier League.
The Spurs lost just their 2nd game in the season against Newcastle and have looked a very impressive squad this season. They have easily outscored opponents recently and will be looking to add some firepower in the January window that might help them take the next step towards the title. Pochettino however has stated that a top-4 finish is the first priority and it will be hard for the whites to maintain this record over the whole season.
Liverpool are another club who have entertained thoughts of winning title this season. The way they won at the Bridge and the Etihad showed the effect of the new manager on the team. But losses against Newcastle United and Crystal Palace have bought out the loop holes in the system. They are without a win in the last three games and will have to improve drastically if they are to reach the top of the table.
The outsiders in this title race are surely Claudio Ranieri’s men who have taken the Premier League by a storm. They are leading goal scorers this season and have lost just once in the 16 matches in the league. They are scoring for fun at the moment and are high on confidence. The players believe in themselves and the ability of the team mates and are producing some fascinating football on the field.
As already mentioned, title talk may be too soon for the Foxes but they will surely end the season in a position no one expected them to reach at the start of the season. This whole race is so open due to the horrible season that the current Champions are enduring.
Chelsea have been disappointing this season in the Premier League and are placed 16th in the table just 1 point off the relegation zone. They are no longer in contention even for a European spot and have left the title in the hands of the in-form clubs this season. The race is still wide open and this busy festive season may go a long way in deciding who can win the league come the end of the season.
Leave your say on who has the greatest chance to win the league.
