Manchester United are reportedly planning to make a bid for out of favour Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.
Yet to play a single game this season, the Nigeria international’s contract with the Blues expires after this term and there are still no plans to renew his contract.
English news outlet The Sun has claimed that United boss Jose Mourinho is eyeing to cash in on the opportunity with a cut-price New Year bid as he is keen to bring the midfielder at Old Trafford.
The 29-year old, who was signed by Jose Mourinho in 2006 during his first stint with the Blues, was a vital player for the Portuguese tactician last year at the Stamford Bridge and played 25 games in the Premier League. However, Mikel has been completely frozen out by Antonio Conte which has raised speculations about his future with the Blues.
The Nigerian recently admitted that he might leave the club in the upcoming transfer window which can be a huge boost for the Red Devils.
Speaking to BBC, he had said:“I have never been a guy to make excuses, I never shy away from my responsibilities.”
“Yes, people will say ‘he went to the Olympics’ and ‘he didn’t have a pre-season with the team’ and a new manager came in and was probably upset I went to the Olympics and thinks I don’t care about the team.
“I don’t want to make excuses. In the end of the day, I have to keep training hard and trying to change the manager’s mind. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.
“I will keep doing my best and ready for when called up upon. We will see what happens in January.”
On the other hand, Man United have still not offered a contract extension to their veteran midfielder Michael Carrick which might prompt Mourinho to go for the Chelsea star.
