The victory at the Riverside on the weekend over Middlesbrough has placed Manchester United within five points of a place in the top-4 having also played a couple of games less than their rivals Liverpool who are hanging around in the fourth place.
Jose Mourinho’s side are now unbeaten in their last 18 games in the league and are currently the in-form team in the competition but they have not been able to finish games and have had to settle for a number of draws that has affected their league position.
Mourinho is frustrated at the options at his disposal as he has not been able to stick to a starting XI that can win him games constantly.
He has used a steady midfield and a familiar front line. Jose Mourinho’s back-4 at the Old Trafford has just not been consistent enough.
The manager spent on the likes of Eric Bailly in the summer transfer window at the start of the season but he picked up a couple of injuries and was also out on international duty, leaving Mourinho a bit light at the back.
This saw the manager use a centre-back pairing of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, leaving Chris Smalling out of the first team.
The English defensive duo has been decent at times this season but one player who has been exceptional in a make-shift position is an Argentine star, Marcos Rojo.
The full-back turned centre-back, Rojo joined the club under Louis van Gaal but since not been able to cement a place in the starting XI.
His performances were so good that the manager has now had to stick with him at left-back as all his centre-back options are available.
From being linked with an exit in the summer to becoming the first choice under the manager, Rojo has improved by leaps and bounds and Manchester United are now ready to reward him for his consistency.
According to The Sun , this marked improvement could see his current contract extended by another year until 2020.
The Red Devils are currently in talks with the player and his representatives as Mourinho wants Rojo to spend another couple of years at the club.
He may not be the first choice in years to come but Rojo will surely be used extensively by Manchester United in years to come and should have no problem penning this new deal.
